Speaker Pelosi Breaks Her Promise Of Transparency
Nov 6, 2009
You have probably heard that Speaker Pelosi is planning to hold a rare Saturday vote to push the controversial Democratic “health care reform” bill through the House of Representatives. But have you heard that doing so would violate Speaker Pelosi’s own promise to allow 72 hours for the public to review the contents of the final health care bill’s text? The “The Weekly Standard” article linked here has the story.
Apparently, the Speaker is not much of a believer in transparency. Which is regrettable, as representative governments are not well served when bills of such sweeping importance are voted on without their contents being known either by the public or by the representatives who are elected to serve them.
We should expect more from Congress. Hopefully, Speaker Pelosi’s attempt to force this bill through so quickly and with so little debate over its final contents will strengthen the efforts of those, like our own Rep. Bill Posey, who have been in the forefront of efforts to require Congress to provide at least 72 hours of time to review a bill before any vote can be held.
Speaker Pelosi should slow down and allow time for an open review of the health care bill. Transparency in government is too important an issue to all of us to be trivialized by the Speaker’s empty promises.
