A Note from Sen. Haridopolos on SB 6
Mar 24, 2010
Dear Friends,
Thank you very much for your interest in Senate Bill 6. I wanted to take this opportunity to provide you with all the information based on the research I have gathered on this issue.
I’ve had the opportunity to read some of the information that was sent to you by the FEA, and I admit if I received the same information, I too would be worried. I wanted to provide you with background information based on what you’ve read so that you can have the full story about the bill.
Since last Spring, I have been fortunate to sit down with members of the FEA a number of times, and again twice in the last two weeks, including as recently as Monday. I listened to their concerns and have been working with all involved to see how we can make improvements to Florida’s education system.
I think we can all agree that high performing teachers deserve a bonus for their outstanding work. This bill will allow those teachers to be rewarded for that contribution to our kids.
For years I’ve heard concerns from teachers that the FCAT is too early in the year, and I agree. One of the important provisions of SB 6 allows us to work toward a more comprehensive, end-of-year test that can truly measure a year’s worth of work in a year’s worth of time. It should also be noted that many of the significant proposed changes do not go into effect for a few years, giving us the opportunity to work with teachers to ensure a smooth transition.
Thank you for your dedication to our children. As a product of public schools, I know how crucial your role is in the future of our state and nation.
Please take the time to review the information below and read the full bill here, and the most recent analysis here. Feel free to contact me with any additional questions or concerns. I look forward to continuing to work with you on this issue.
Sincerely,
Mike Haridopolos
Senator, District 26
