Information on Brevard & Indian River Coastal Cleanup Preparedness
Jun 18, 2010
BREVARD (Bob Lay, Director)
-People who would like to volunteer should dial 211, where Keep Brevard Beautiful is collecting names
-Volunteers will not be allowed to touch tar balls or oil substances. Their primary duty will be sighting and reporting incidents.
-BP and the Coast Guard will have contractors who will be trained to deal with substances on the beach
-There will be a training session (approx. 1 hour) for volunteers, which will probably start around July 1
-The US Coast Guard is in charge of cleanup and all response activities. South Brevard is in the Miami Coast Guard area and North Brevard is in the Jacksonville area.
-Counties have been told to apply for financial assistance directly through BP
-Mr. Lay does not see any logistical or financial troubles at this point. All local governments are acting as they should under the Area Contingency Plan
INDIAN RIVER (John King, Director)
-People who would like to volunteer should do so through Volunteer Florida
-Volunteer information and all current spill information is available at ircgov.com
-The Coast Guard has plans for booms when that becomes necessary
-Mr. King speaks with Bob Lay regularly and they are coordinating efforts to ensure the best possible response
-Mr. King stressed that citizens should not touch tar balls, as they have always been instructed not to do since they are a common occurrence on Indian River’s beaches
