HOLDING BANKS ACCOUNTABLE: Florida Senate President-designate Mike Haridopolos, R-Merritt Island, is championing an issue that certainly will resonate with struggling homeowners facing foreclosure: How financial institutions have handled billions of “bailout” dollars they received from the federal government.

“The whole goal with the bailout of the banks was to make sure there would be equity available for everyday Americans and really, from the anecdotal evidence we’re getting, that’s not happening,” said Haridopolos, whose district includes portions of Indian River and St. Lucie counties. “If they are not getting money out in circulation for people who need these loans, then what was the point of the bailout?”

Haridopolos requested this week that the state Senate Banking and Insurance Committee investigate claims from Florida homeowners that large banks, such as JP Morgan Chase, CitiGroup and Wells Fargo, have used the money to improve their bottom lines rather than assist homeowners.

Struggling homeowners deserve answers.
