Haridopolos will be next Senate president

Jun 29, 2009

It’s finally official, or as official as it can get 16 months before the vote: Sen. Mike Haridopolos, R-Melbourne, will be president of the Florida Senate in 2010-12.

Haridopolos beat back a challenge by Sen. Michael Bennett, R-Bradenton, months ago. But Bennett never conceded, giving rise to rumor that he might be mounting a back-door coup d’etat. On Friday, Bennett ended the speculation: he endorsed Haridopolos and said he’d vote for him in November 2010 (assuming the GOP retains control of the Senate.)

“Mike and I have been friends since our first day in the Legislature, and I am confident he will be a strong president,” said Bennett in a statement.  “I will be honored to be a part of his leadership team and continue to serve my constituents and the Florida Senate in this capacity.”

Presuming Republicans retain control, this means two Central Floridians will preside over the Legislature beginning in 2010. The House Speaker-designate is Dean Cannon, R-Winter Park.
