Florida to Receive Federal Education Stimulus Dollars

May 12, 2009

The U.S. Department of Education has approved Florida’s application for federal stimulus money for education. The U.S. Secretary of Education announced Monday that Florida schools will immediately receive more than $1.8 billion. Florida would be eligible to receive another $891 million next fall.

The stimulus money will be used as part of an education budget passed last week by the Florida Legislature. The budget minimizes impacts on our students and increases average per student funding throughout Florida to $6,873. This is an increase of about $28 per student from the 2008-09 school year.

This money from Washington is something that all Floridians have already paid for.  We chose to make use of this funding because if we had not, other states would have, and we would have continued to pay the bill.
